Why Choose Acupuncture Hassocks to treat your back pain?

There are so many different therapies and therapists now offering ways to help with your back pain, so how do you know which therapy, and which therapist to choose?

·       Traditional Acupuncture

While all therapies which work with musculoskeletal pain can certainly help to lower pain, Traditional Acupuncture such as that practiced by Katie at Acupuncture Hassocks has a particular ability to release muscles which are typically difficult for massage or other modalities such as Osteopathy, Physiotherapy or Chiropractic to treat as quickly or effectively.

This is particularly true of lower back pain, Sciatica or Piriformis Syndrome, which require the glutes, the biggest muscles in the body (located in the buttocks) to be effectively released from deep inside the muscles.

This is also true of back pain around the upper back and shoulders. Whilst massage or even dry needling can release the muscles in this part of the body, it is usually less effective and long-lasting, while being significantly more painful.

It is a natural, pain-free way to treat back pain. Muscles being triggered by hand (or elbow!) can be extremely painful. Muscles being released with Traditional Acupuncture is painless, highly effective and longer-lasting.

·       An experienced and caring Acupuncturist

Katie is an experienced Acupuncturist who really cares about her patients, and is genuinely invested in helping them to feel better. She aims to create a warm and welcoming environment in which to be treated, so that her patients feel safe and comfortable from the outset.

·       Low-Cost Acupuncture Treatments (these are not compulsory!)

Acupuncture Hassocks is fortunate to have the facilities to offer low cost ‘multibed’ acupuncture for most pain or injury treatments. There are two treatment couches with privacy curtains around each bay. Treatments are then staggered across appointment times. This means that a full treatment (40 mins) costs only £42. Please mention that you would like to book for multibed when making your appointment.

How Does Acupuncture Help with Back Pain?

Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. It is widely used to help manage pain, quickly and effectively release tight muscles and encourage the body's natural pain-regulating processes.

Research suggests acupuncture helps with back pain by:

  • Reducing pain and discomfort – Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system and encourages the body to release endorphins, the body's natural pain-relieving mechanisms.

  • Easing muscle tension – Treatment quickly and effectively relaxes tight, overworked muscles and reduce feelings of pain and stiffness.

  • Improving Joint mobility – By helping to ease discomfort and tension, acupuncture may make everyday movements feel more comfortable.

  • Supporting relaxation – Pain can be stressful, and acupuncture offers a calming treatment that may help you feel more relaxed and at ease.

  • Improving overall wellbeing – A more holistic approach to treatment considers not just your symptoms, but how pain is affecting your day-to-day life.

What Types of Back Pain Can Acupuncture Help With?

Acupuncture can help with a range of back-related problems, including:

  • Acute Lower back pain

  • Chronic Lower back pain

  • Sciatica

  • Piriformis Syndrome

  • Muscle tightness and tension

  • Stiffness and restricted movement

  • Upper and middle back discomfort

  • Back pain associated with everyday activities, posture or physical strain

Everyone experiences pain differently, so your treatment will be tailored to your individual needs and circumstances.

Acupuncture helps Low Back Pain

Low back pain is extremely common and affects people of all ages. It can be caused by poor lumbar support when seating, sitting down too often, weak core muscles or injury. It can also be caused by overwork and even stress, as these things can deplete our Kidney energy, causing pain and weakness in the lumbar area.

Acupuncture is an extremely effective treatment for low back pain and can treat both musculoskeletal causes or pain caused by kidney qi deficiency, or both. Patients usually feel relief from the first session.

Acupuncture helps Sciatica

acupuncture helps sciatica

Sciatica is a common condition which is characterised by pain in the lower back which can radiate to the buttocks and down the back or the side of the legs. It can be extremely painful and make walking, sitting or sleeping difficult, interfering with a person’s quality of life.

It is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve in the lumbar spine area, and because the sciatic nerve runs down the back of the legs all the way down to the feet, pain can be felt in all or any of these places, including the sides of the legs.

Stress is also known to contribute to flare ups of Sciatica.

Acupuncture can help relieve the pain of Sciatica, and patients usually will feel a reduction in pain from the first session, though often a few sessions are required to resolve chronic Sciatica.

Acupuncture helps Piriformis Syndrome

Acupuncture helps piriformis syndrome

Piriformis Syndrome has the same symptoms as Sciatica, namely pain that radiates from the buttocks down the backs and sides of the legs. The cause of the pain in the case of Piriformis Syndrome however is different to that of Sciatica in that it is caused by a tight Piriformis muscle (in the buttock) which compresses the Sciatic nerve, rather than by an issue with the lumbar spine compressing the Sciatic nerve.

Acupuncture is extremely effective at treating Piriformis Syndrome because it can get right to the root cause and effectively release the tight Piriformis muscle, relieving pressure on the sciatic nerve and thereby relieving pain in the buttocks and legs. Patients will usually feel a considerable reduction in pain from the first treatment.

Acupuncture help Upper Back Pain

acupuncture helps upper back pain

Upper back pain is often caused by issues with the neck, lifting heavy objects, poor posture when working at a desk or on a laptop, stress or anxiety. Hunching of the shoulders (which many people do often, and unconsciously) can cause intense pain in the upper back, especially in the Trapezius muscles.

Acupuncture is an extremely effective treatment for upper back pain and patients usually feel considerable relief from the first session.

How quickly will acupuncture reduce my pain levels?

Typically, pain and inflammation will be significantly reduced even after the first session, and for acute (recent onset) back pain, only 1 or 2 sessions may be necessary.

For more chronic (longer term) back pain, multiple sessions are often required since initial improvements after the first session or so may not last. This is perfectly normal and does not mean the treatment isn’t working - quite the opposite! Any initial reduction in pain indicates that acupuncture treatments will be highly likely to address the issue, so long as the correct course of treatment is followed. Acupuncture treatments are cumulative so they build on the ones before, with the number of pain free days between sessions increasing over time.

What if I don't like the idea of low cost multibed acupuncture?

Multibed appointments are not obligatory! Many patients prefer to have a private session, at least initially, and this is absolutely fine! Multibed is simply there as an option for those who prefer to pay less, but it is absolutely your choice whether you decide to have a multibed treatment or a private one. Initial consultation appointments for musculoskeletal pain cost £65 for 45 minutes.
